Pizza. America’s favorite food. There’s just something about sauce, cheese, meats and herbs and spices all topped over a circular tray of thinly layered crust that makes the human saliva glands go crazy. And it’s no different in New Jersey. So, how is the pizza in New Brunswick? I ventured to find out.

Located in the heart of New Brunswick, Rutgers students are subjected to so many different pizza joints, it’s hard to keep track of what’s real and what’s not. As a College Avenue veteran, I’ve tried almost all of the spots and there is one that continues to rise above the rest.

Daniel’s Pizzeria, located at 204 Easton Avenue, has the best slice of cheese pizza in the Hub City, hands down. Doubling as a sushi place called Sakura Sushi Depot, what Daniel’s lacks in space, it makes up for in size — pizza size that is. Compared to other pizza places in town, Daniel’s pizza slices are considerably bigger.

The selection of pies is also unparalleled and unique ranging from its famous Penne Vodka (cooked with one of the many bottles of Grey Goose greeting you as you walk inside) to Chicken Cordon Bleu to a good old fashioned Sweet Grandma pie. But the best dish at Daniel’s has to be the classic plain slice.

And at $3 for a cheese slice, you are definitely getting a bang for your buck. Once you order, either from the ready-to-go options or made on request, the friendly staff heats your triangle of dough, sauce and cheese to a perfect crisp and you’re all set to chow down — just add some parmesan cheese and some oregano, sit back in one of the many seating options, relax and enjoy.

With it’s location off to the side of the Rutgers nightlife on Easton Ave, this hole in the wall is the perfect hidden secret to get a late night bite to eat. Don’t worry about it being closed because Daniel’s closes at 4 a.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. And if you’re anything like me and want a late night snack during the weeknights as well, Daniel’s closes at 3 a.m. on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Staying in for the night? Daniel’s also delivers. Delivery has a $10 minimum and a $1.50 delivery fee — relatively low compared to other New Brunswick eateries.

However if you’re a broke college student at Rutgers, Daniel’s might not be the best place for you. Unlike some of its counterparts, Daniel’s does not accept RU Express — money that can be put on your student ID.

Nevertheless, Daniel’s Pizzeria in New Brunswick is a home run. Not only does it live up to the Jersey name, but the atmosphere created in such a little space is unprecedented. Located in a state known for its pizza, and surrounded by frauds; Daniel’s does not disappoint. 9.1/10
